My first week at Bates technical i walked in with very basic knowledge on gasoline engines but i did not fully understand the workings of a diesel engine. The most i had done to a engine was replace a camshaft which was easy on a gas inline 4 cylinder but with a big diesel it was much heavier which had some difficulty and being in the block opposed to being on top with a over head cam. I had little skill with most tools including precision measuring tools. I knew the course would be challenging and informative but i was never expecting the amount of knowledge i would learn in a short period of time. I am very confident going to oem training and using my base knowledge learned at Bates tech to get me certified in my career field. I am very impressed with the amount of knowledge and skill i have obtained. My favorite portion of the class was working with other teams to get the job done. There were other students with the nearly the same engine as my team and we all shared information...

Final weeks

the final weeks of this quarter is when all the groups will be finishing up and getting ready to start there engines. my group was the first to start there engine which made me slightly nervous being that I have never started a engine on an engine stand. my group being the first made sure every connection and bolt and fitting was tight and properly sealed. the engines begin on a rotary stand which allows to be turned 360 degrees for easier disassembly and assembly. after the engine is mostly ready to be ran it goes on a engine running stand and with some assembly of components that had to be taken off due to the are where the rotary stand bolts too the block, the engine is ready to start. some components that had to added afterwards was the secondary oil filter and housing, oil return line for the turbo and oil fill tube. these components where fairly easy to put back on the engine.                 The picture above is the e...

Week: 5 installing heads and checking injector timing This week we installed the heads and started the injection timing process. The picture below is the cam shaft and the roller assembly housing . the rollers ride on the sam and arms lift and lower the push rods witch pushes on rocker arms that pushdown on the injector and valves. the injector timing process was very confusing at first which was sort of discouraging at first but after a few tries and some research I am very comfortable with the process and the accuracy of it. our engine is slightly off oem spec but I was very happy with the results. I am excited to learn more next week and finding info on the shimming process to correct the injection timing. one question I have is if and when are we going to learn about Jacobs brake? the book talked very briefly about it and its a possibility I over read a section about it but it seems to me it would fit in this chapter.

Week 3 Brakes We have been learning disassemble and replacement of components in drum and disc brakes. I was sick for three days during the week so I did not experience everything but I really do like how much easier truck brakes are to work on then a car or light duty trucks. The drum style brakes (shown above) can be taken apart if your good in less then a minute and for a truck shop they are easy and quick money. The newer style discs are about just as easy if you are just replacing pads. I wish I could have been at school for the rest of the week to learn more about tires. I am excited to see what next week brings and eager to learn more.

Week: 1 Safety and Tools

Image
Safety Week one in the diesel program we are covering many different types of tools and also safety rules and regulations. One thing I have found very interesting is just how almost every part on a mechanical diesel engine is very heavy and the potential for a crushing injury is very high. With proper lift techniques and regular equipment inspections, the risk of injury is cut down. Many things we have learned about safety in the classroom(below) I have applied at my work shop and feel much safer and prepared. I also found that the amount of accidents that are preventable is astonishing. many lives could be saved with small amounts of safety knowledge. Being aware of the rules and what's going on around you is absolute necessary when working in any environment even the easiest of jobs can turn into a dangerous situation if handled carelessly. Tools We have also been going over many different tools and styles that work best in the industry and what to expect to need in ...
